My journey to be a Comic Artist
My journey to be a Comic Artist
I recently undertook comic drawing lessons(or more accurately, manga drawing lessons) as a hobby in the hope of turning into a semi-professional or even professional manga comic artist. I wanted to have a hobby that might somehow generate satisfaction and revenue.
However I found out that although there are many who aspire to be comic artists, few actually started in their dreams, fewer people ever published their own comics, and even more fewer people actually reveal their experiences of their journey in becoming a comic artist. I thought it would be great to have such a resource online.
My drawing background
I started out with no drawing background. I can’t draw for nuts when I was in my teens, and the most I would draw were squares and fonts.
In my country, opportunites for comic artists and creation are really lacking. In my teen years noone promoted comic drawing in my junior and senior school years. It is only recently that some schools adopted comic drawing as part of their club activities, and an awareness of comics, manga and anime began to grow.
However I was a heavy comics reader in my early years: I read Chinese comics(manhwa), manga and English comics such as Archie. I loved the experience of reading comics.
So I felt sorry that I only started to learn drawing comics at such a late age: I’m going to be in my mid-twenties soon. That’s way too old to start learning isn’t it?
However I did a search online, and found out that many successful manga or comic artists are actually in their mid-thirties and even forties. I just took heart for the fact that I am not that old afterall.
So this blog will be about my experiences of becoming a semi-professional/professional comic artist. I hope that people who have this dream don’t give up too easily!
